Found Gallery presents “Spring Awakenings,” a series of large, rich, and loaded oil paintings by Wolfgang Bauer. For the first time is in Los Angeles, the Austrian-born artist presents his androgynous, bold and curious work in its entirety.
The concept for the latest series of painting was initially inspired by the iconoclastic Frank Wedekind play “Spring Awakening.” This series evolved from interdisciplinary studies of German literature, philosophy and anthropology, and explores facets of childhood development within sexual, negative, patriarchal, family structures in Western society. To promote a discourse between the viewer and the paintings, the portrayed characters make direct contact. This engages the viewer as a reactor to the narrative of the presented situation; with viewers’ own social, cultural, political and religious affiliations as pertinent variables. Ultimately, the portrayed characters aim to function as catalysts of socialization, prompted by patriarchal family structures within Western society.
