Stephen Tompkin’s Transmogrifications opens this February at Found. This Southern California based artist is no stranger to the West Coast and greater U.S. art scene. Born and raised in Cleveland, Tompkins migrated westward over the years and has exhibited his work extensively throughout the U.S. and in Europe since 1997. His work has appeared in Raw Vision, New American Paintings, and Juxtapoz and was recently published in the book BLK/MRKT TWO by Die Gestalten Verlag. His animated short Gummymorph appears in the recently released film Freak Out in Cucamonga, a documentary about the early studio years of Frank Zappa, one of his inspirations. He recently founded his experimental film company, Wunderwerkes, and is currently directing and editing a documentary film about his friend, indie artist/musician Daniel Johnston based on over four hours of raw performance footage captured in Daniel’s hometown of Waller Texas in 1999. It is scheduled to be released later this year.
