Matt Maust, who spends his days playing bass for The Cold War Kids, is an accomplished artist. Much of the inspiration for his work stems from stints in foreign countries like Italy, Germany, and Japan, where his fascination grew for graphic design in places where he could not understand the language. Often, he would cut layers of posters, revealing a history of the wall and its postings, and save them to refer to when he created his pieces. However, all of the design work in Maust’s pieces is his own; all of the imagery is hand picked and manipulated before being collaged and mangled on his surfaces.

Maust spends the majority of his time playing bass in touring in the rock outfit Cold War Kids. He claims the name ‘Cold War Kids’ is not exlusive to the band members but, rather, applies to his community of friends and collaborators as a whole. You may recognize Maust’s Italian Futurist and German Deconstructivist-influenced style from imagery used in the clothing line ‘Ever.’

Matt Maust’s ‘I’m celebrating my love for you with a pint of beer & new tattoo’ was shown at Found Gallery in December of 2006. Matt Maust will be returning to Found in March of 2008 with collaborator Matt Wignall for Your Alimony Check Won’t Buy a Bigger Room
