Irene Kai is an award winning artist, author, publisher, teacher and activist. Born in Hong Kong, she graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and received her Master of Design degree from the Royal College of Art, London. She taught Graphic Design at Penn State University and has traveled extensively throughout the world. She is the author of The Golden Mountain, and the literal inspiration for George Segal’s Hand on Chest which hangs today in the San Diego Museum of Art. Her work has been shown in London, New York, and up and down the West Coast. Kai is the winner of the National Freedom Fighter Award.
When it was first shown in London in 1976, What Do You See? caused a major uproar within the Royal College of Art staff and led to a change in the school’s hiring policy. The collection was released as a book in 2006, and will be shown at Found Gallery from June 8 - 30th, 2008.
