Digital Consciousness

We just stumbled upon this excellent resource for Southern California’s never ending list of Art Walks, Open Studios, & Art Festivals from Digital Consciousness.  They have the rest of 2007 & much of 2008 already pegged out; thanks to their tidy efforts of compiling such a wide range of large scale art events in our area.

The L.A. Aesthetic

“The L.A. Aesthetic”

“Eden’s Edge,” the current exhibition within UCLA’s Hammer Art Museum, gathers fifteen distinctively creative individuals under the umbrella of “L.A. artists.” Well, ok. So there’s a slew of people in this city hawking their craft. What makes this bunch worthy of such a prestigious show? The Hammer hails this group as sort-of Regionalists, albeit this group is more David Hockney than Thomas Hart Benton. We’ll call them So-Cal Regionalists, each applying their Angelean influence and/or perspective to the work they create. The result is a portrait of Los Angeles as diverse and contradictory as our beloved city itself.

Sorry, Kind of - Cult Night

photo_10.jpg

Although several of my friends are participating in this show, it’s hard for me not to be completely honest when thinking about tonight’s CRAZY 4 CULT show at 1988.

‘Over 50 artists put their own spin on classic cult films with one-of-a-kind original [sic] artwork’

That, I’m fine with. However, the evening will be hosted by Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier, and I have to call shenanigans on someone for that. Granted, I had Clerks on VHS when I was in seventh grade, but then I grew up. Did I miss something? Is Kevin Smith [see: Jersey Girl] the face of cult films or is he just a poor fat man’s Tarantino? I’m all for introducing other elements into a typical gallery setting, but there’s a huge disconnect.

Little can be found about this artist, but rumor has it, he’s cute and straight.

SLIDELUCKPOTSHOW los angeles

big_3.jpg

LEAVE IT TO THE ARTISTS to make inherently whack things [especially analog or early digital] like ASCII, PowerPoint, disposable cameras, calligraphy, bookbinding, crochet, & model airplanes fun again [or for the first time]. This Friday, June 29, the Slideluckpotshow crew celebrates their 9th combination of the historically avoided family rituals of slideshows & potlucks in LA. I’m no good behind the wok, so I’ll have to buy something awesome & unoffensive to bring [or weird, regional, & quirky]. Here’s the full info from the organizers:

Vs.

 dmonteavaro0607a.jpg

Filed under more things I won’t be able to attend this weekend, Los Angeles Art Assocation/Gallery 825 present the group show ‘Vs.’ this Saturday, as the opening will be held from 6-9 and conversations with the artists from 6-7.

The juried show features artists grouped together in pairs, seemingly at random [not sure what the system exactly was], to produce ‘non-intuitive’ art.  One of the artists, Dan Goldman says a lot of the work he’s seen is great.  We’ve invited him to be our insider correspondant and report back next week with his experience.

Creators Series — LA

 ds2_3507.jpg

This weekend, the newly launched Creators Series will be visiting Los Angeles, posting up panels, music, lectures, and presentations, this weekend at your local EchoPlex or Jensen Rec Center.

I will be unable to attend the majority of events going on, but I highly recommend the Graffiti Research Lab [graf kids with library cards and cool ideas/inventions] and Paul ‘Moose’ Curtis will be speaking in panel format, under the title ‘New Urban Interventionists,’ Saturday at 5.
