An Interview with Alla Berkovich
Found sat down with designer Alla Berkovich recently to chat about her work, her art, and her inspiration. Alla’s Fall Line will be on display at Found Gallery this coming Sunday, October 12 (3-6pm). For more information about the art and the artist, visit SoAlla.com
Found: What inspires you in your work?
Alla Berkovich: I love working with beautiful materials. Sitting down and being able to experiment and try new things is my favorite part of the process. Also, I love to see how great people feel when they wear the jewelry, that really inspires me.
Your pieces are very unique. How did you discover that crochetting metals was even possible?
AB: Actually this process of crocheting metals has been around since the 1960s. I found a few old textbooks and decided to update some techniques and styles and make them my own. It has really been a lot of fun.
Found: Some of your jewelry is downright regal. Are your designs influenced by a specific style or period in fashion?
AB: I was born and raised in Russia, so many of my influences come from that culture. I draw ideas from things as simple as the flower decorated yarn hats I used to crochet for my daughters, to more elaborate traditional Russian costumes. I also grew up with four seasons, so I like to use all colors and textures in my pieces.
Found: You are also an accomplished pianist. It seems that you have made a second career for yourself. How does your jewelry tie into your love of music?
AB: To me they are so connected. Some pieces are more dramatic, others more romantic, others are more funky, just like the music I love. I really think that one inspires the other for me.
Found: Music and Jewelry sounds like a busy schedule! What do you like to do in your free time?
AB: I love to cook, entertain friends, watch live music, travel and spend time with my family.
