Pretend Behavior Photos

Click here to see photos from pt. 3 of the Spacial Reconstruction installation, ‘Pretend Behavior’ by Morrisa Maltz.  It was another intense, loopy 36 hour reception where people and things shuffled and interacted with the space and work.

CITY OF MEXICO: Reflections

From Sarah Dougherty [Spacial Reconstruction: City of Mexico creator]:

The City of Mexico at Found Gallery was an experiment. The installation’s premise was to build a home reflecting the one filled with art and friendships and love I built in Mexico. As I and my brother, then best friend, and finally my boyfriend inhabited the space with me as we worked in it, the place became meaningful and became a home. When I went to Mexico I similarly created a home out of a few necessary suitcase items, local tiny flora, cheap imported plastic items, gifts, etc. To create the physical space we painted the backgrounds with meaningful colors- the deepest yellow and blue came together at the back wall in a polluted looking off-white, imperfect and rich, which became the “gallery” wall, a portion of the room that featured prints from the year in mexico. I tried to let the gallery and location also limit and therefore be creative shaping forces behind the exhibit, since it was about bricolage- making do with what’s around.

Mexico Photos

Sarah Dougherty, along with her brother Dave, friend Susie Simpson, and boyfriend Josh [Pinche Gringo] all became denizens of the gallery space starting two Sundays ago.  This past Saturday, we saw the results of several months of preparation and thought around her memories and experiences in Mexico City.

We all had different ideas or speculation as to what would happen, who would visit, how they would approach and use the space, and how the installation would become reshuffled, little by little during the 36 hours of this last weekend.  No one really tried to enter the gallery space very late [after 2am], at least to our knowledge.  There were steady streams of people coming in, never fully crowding the gallery, resulting in a more relaxed atmosphere for the most part.

CITY OF MEXICO: opens, closes this weekend

Part one of Spacial Reconstruction at Found opens Saturday at noon and runs through Sunday at midnight.  Sarah Dougherty and co. have been living in the gallery for the past week, transforming the space to meet somewhere between a recreation of her Mexico City hotel room-turned-apartment and a colorful, mythical place leaking from Sarah’s head.

This 36 hour exhibition has a few scheduled events.

+ Sat. 10pm - Susie Simpson performs songs based her Mexico experience

+ Sat. 11pm and Sunday 2am - Screening of Mexico shorts and videos by Sarah Dougherty + co.

+ Sun. 8pm - Pinche Gringo performs — myspace.com/pinchegringoband

Otherwise, you could walk into a number of unplanned events, rituals, or exercises.

Joint Custody Project collaborator Despina Stokou has recently launched an initiative, Apply Softly, best described as people who “are friends in myspace and facebook…but not in life, at least not the conventional way.”  She and her four ‘friends’ will preview work at this year’s Preview Berlin [the city’s premier emerging arts fair this fall].

Visit the newly launched site applysoftly.
