STOP AND SMELL THE SEEDY: Samantha Magowan

object_14.jpg

[100 Ways of Performing as an Object #14, 2007, Lamba Print, 24″ x 36″ - by Samantha Magowan]

Last night at Cal State Long Beach, I went to the Greater MFA 2007 Closing [which I’ll share some imagery from soon], and my guide and I stumbled upon a little nook full of disco balls, neon collage, and an olfactory sensation that was vaguely nostalgic but, also, terrifying.  The installation was by Samantha Magowan, a friend of mine, and after meeting with her today, I had to know what the odor was.

I’m fairly certain she said it was a perfect storm concoction of scents by J. Lo, Brittney, & Paris.

Anyway, Ms. Magowan will be the featured artist at the Art Crawl X kickoff party at the Echo-Plex on Oct. 11 [in addition to having a solo show in Italy this October as well].  We look forward to sharing more of her fiery, skanky, gorgeous work soon.

CREATIVE COMMONS: Fair Uses

creative-commons_logo.jpg

New Found Allies Creative Commons are intent on  spreading their ideas on licensing to the city where much of our media is created, brokered, and archived.  After their successful first LA salon, the Creative Commons folks have graciously volunteered to spearhead a presentation/panel on the most current definitions of Fair Use for classical visual artists, designers, musicians, bloggers, and so on.  This informative discussion will take place during Art Crawl X, on Sunday Oct. 14, at Found Gallery.  We’ll announce guest speakers as soon as we lock up the details.

Diane Barcelowsky Kickoff Tonight

 diane-barcelowsky_webmasks.jpg

Sorry the blog has been idle the last 3 days — lots of business to attend to here.  First off, the Eastside Art Crawl will be taking place on October 12, 13, & 14.  More info about participants [including sneak peaks at work and profiles of the local galleries] to be coming very shortly.

Also, tonight we open Diane Barcelowsky’s latest orgy of culture, religion, space, & time, ‘YELLOW BUCKETS OF BLOOD 2.’  We’ve been somewhat cryptic about the explanation of tonight’s proceedings, but finally, here is some more info from the parties involved. Diane Barcelowsky’s works on paper have been exhibited in New York, New Jersey, Boston, Pennsylvania,  Barcelona, Australia, Beijing, and England, and this specific body of work is a sequel to her solo show at Cinders Gallery in New York.

Art Crawl X

As of this weekend, Found Gallery will be managing the Silverlake/Los Feliz/Echo Park Art Crawl, which is an annual art walk/drive/bike through our neighborhood[s].  This is the tenth year, and we’re looking to make it as enjoyable and engaging as possible.  Dates and such are not locked yet, but if you’d like to participate/submit suggestions, we’re open to it.  More soon.
