A&K, Brady Prove that Its Really Not Hard*

convertible.jpg

We covered Anthony Schrag’s Its Not Hard back in February. A few of us stood up and took notice. Our very own A&K, who’s show Not Particularly Tall open this Saturday, as well as Found(er) Brady Brim-DeForest, were selected for inclusion in the Emerging section of the soon to be published book Its Not Hard. Each submitted a proposal for an unrealized/unmade work of art. The submissions spanned the gamut of artistic disciplines and involve convertibles, umbrellas and the world’s longest wall.

For our friends across the pond, there will be a panel discussion in Glasgow on Saturday, June 7th at CCA/InterMedia. Thanks to Shawnzlea for the photo.

Creative Commons Salon Photos

Thanks to Holly Willis [Director of Academic Programs at the Institute for Multimedia Literacy], Rex Bruce [Director, Los Angeles Center for Digital Art], Jack Lerner [Acting Director, USC Intellectual Property and Technology Law Clinic], and Chris Weibart + Michael Wilson [Multimedia Designers, Interactive Hologram Forgers] for their excellent presentations at last week’s Creative Commons Salon.

Cameron Parkins from CC was kind enough to take some lovely, ethereal portraits during the presentation.   They are all Attribution 2.0 labeled, so you can use them however you see fit, as long as you give credit to the creator, Cameron.

We will post links to their presentations as soon as they are up.  Our next Salon is tentatively scheduled for June.

Logo Love

Found Gallery Logo
Daivid Airey hosted a blog logo competition this spring. Out of the hundreds of blogs that were submitted, Found Gallery’s logo was chosen as a finalist in the Design and Photography category. Out of the 20 finalists in each of the 10 categories, 15 winners were selected. Our logo, designed by Brady Brim-DeForest received the award for fifth place.

Here’s what the jude, Steve Delahoyde, had to say: “Beyond just being pleasant to look during a quick glance, a good logo should impress on a couple of fronts, should you decide to spend some time thinking it over. I think Found has done that really well. I loved that you can build your own interpretation of the filled-in circles; either representing the big finding the little, or the part to the whole, or the “O” rolling away and becoming something new and ready to be plucked up by a passerby. Plus, of course, the obvious dot as in ‘dot com.’ It’s not perfect, as I’m not 100% sold on using the two different fonts, but it’s a really fun logo to spend some time with and enjoy, and that’s a mark of success in my book.”

DataPortability Needs Your Help

Brady’s DataPortability Logo

DataPortability is rapidly changing the industry-wide conversation about data silos, open and portable data standards, and what it means to truly own your identity online. One of our own, Brady Brim-DeForest, has been an active player inside the DataPortability movement since January of this year. In February 2008, DataPortability received a cease and desists notice from RedHat concerning their original logo. Instead of sulking, they decided to hold a contest.

Brady got busy and entered his DataPortability OpenLock concept (seen at right).  Now we just need people to get out and vote.  So, lend a hand and cast your ballot.

Oh, and don’t forget to join us, on May 24th, for the DataPortability Los Angeles Meetup, hosted by yours truly, Found Gallery.

REPOSTS: Shenanigans and Happenings

We now take the time to point to two very similar publications, the New York Times and Cracked.com, and pieces they posted this weekend about two relevant Found subjects, LA happenings and jokes, respectively.

Another Art Weekend

kentucky.jpg

[the next Chris Burden, right]

While everyone here in LA is abuzz, overbooked for a weekend full of art, non-violent protest, and Eddie Vedderisms, we’re looking ahead to later this year and making plans for a trip to another mega-art experience.  No, not Art Forum Berlin.  We’re counting the days, hours, half-lifes until the Kentucky Art Car Weekend.

The greater Los Angeles metropolitan population is about four times the entire population of the state of Kentucky, but Kentucky’s greatest natural resources, automobiles and bourbon, must have inspired the organizers to create the sweetest Art Car Weekend this side of Istanbul.

Book your tickets like now.

Found has been working hard to consistently deliver you new, bold art and artists. Tomorrow night, we celebrate the opening of photographer and manipulator Nicole Belle from 6-9pm. Her work is excellent, and we hope you all can join us. Click here to read the feature cover story in Citizen LA.  We discuss her upbringing, her various stints in New York, how she ended up in school in California, and her use of the human form. The exhibit runs through April 30.

C is for Candy [Chang]

 sidewalk_child1.jpg

Thanks to BoingBoing for turning us on to NY artist Candy Chang’s literal street art project.  Her direct questions that take the form of psychiatric prompts are the simple forms that can be found around town on the ground.
