Joint Custody Project now open

jcp_gen_ban.jpg

The follow up to 2007’s inaugural Joint Custody Project at Found will come in the form of 2 collaborative projects occurring this June in Berlin and Los Angeles.  If you or someone you know is an artist [painter, illustrator, graphic designer, conceptual artist, animator, street artist, and on] in these two cities and would like to apply, our application has just launched here.

The Los Angeles project will be guest curated by two exceptional LA artists [TBA soon], and the Berlin project will be curated by Chris Cruse and Jonny Coleman.  Both projects will feature a significant amount of restructuring and refining, but they will feature at their core the basic blind collaboration between two artists over a month that the original iteration established.

While we will be inviting certain artists in Berlin and LA, we will consider all applications seriously and encourage all visual artists willing to experiment outside their comfort zones to submit.

Much more will be revealed as we move towards our deadline for applications [April 30 in Berlin, May 15 in LA].  Stay tuned to the JCP blog for the latest.

Saturday morning happening

 silverlake-farmersmarket.jpg

A friend of mine and I were talking about Alan Kaprow recently.  I don’t recall the exact occassion, but there is some anniversary of one of his happenings or something akin.  I then brought the idea of starting some happenings with the Found people on Sunday.  We came up with several pretty wild ideas, but we wanted to start with one.  We’re going to hold it this coming Saturday morning [March 15] at the Farmer’s Market in Silver Lake [map].

If you want to partake in the improvised mania, please arrive at 9am and email me to confirm that you’re coming.  Bring a still camera or camera phone or both.  These are not just props; make sure they work & that you know how to use them.  Dress like you normally do to a Farmer’s Market.  Feel free to bring friends; just let me know how many to expect.

We’ll fill you in on the details on Saturday morning.  We should be done by 10:45-11 at the very latest.  Bring your sense of humor.

Prospect.1 New Orleans

new_orleans_sign.jpg

Thank God for the private sector, which, again, is putting a lot on the line [see: time, money, passion] in order to help make New Orleans relevant again, first as a city and also as a hub for creativity.

This coming winter, Prospect.1 New Orleans will be the first biennial in New Orleans and, will likely be the largest “international exhibition of contemporary art ever presented in the United States.” Curator Dan Cameron [of the New Museum] has boldly assumed the reigns of this project, culling talent from 75 artists [TBA soon] around the world. That being said, this biennial will be a huge undertaking, demanding a large deal of coordination between local public institutions [both art and other civic forces], local & regional galleries and artists, as well as the local tourist marketing entities.

We really hope this project [and its renewal in two years] will be as successful as possible, and will be down there in the December to report on the art and its impact. Oh, and there is no price for admission in the biennial during its two month run.

Last Night’s Party

bodybuilders.jpg

Whether it was rubbing past Villaraigosa, Tara Reid, or the female body builders, I quickly felt that walking into the opening at Ace Gallery was like buying a ticket to an atrocity exhibition. Martin Schoeller and Robert Graham were the heavies on display, as well as Judy Fox’s Cronenberg reject mugwump organ assemblages in the vault room. The evening was overcrowded, overwrought, moist, and smelly; it was everything you’d expect/want it to be. A mess.
