BEAUTIFUL MUTANTS: Mark Mothersbaugh

kakaruduldoo.jpg

Mark Mothersbaugh, yeah that Mark Mothersbaugh, the one who has spread his seed all over pop music [as a member of Devo], television [as the composer of Rugrats], and indie-cum-big-Hollywood movies [as Wes Anderson go to guy], is also an extremely prolific visual artist.

I was first made aware of his visual styles when I saw a wild piece of his in Ghettogloss’ debut rentals catalogue in 2005. Here it is:

OLD TIME RELIJUN: Echo & Smell Stops

arrington-de-dionyso.jpg

Found artist/musician Arrington de Dionyso and his band of merrymen Old Time Relijun are performing tonight and tomorrow night at the Echo and the Smell, respectively.  He originally showed with Found a year ago in our indie-alt-folk-works-on-paper group show Eager Believer.

Diane Barcelowsky, whose work just came down, was also a participating alongside and the two [although Arrington and Diane did not actually meet] realized how well their styles meshed and have since forged a slow moving long distance collaboration from Washington to New York.

ANOTHER 48 HOURS: THINK TANK 1

thinktank.jpg
Eighteen-thirty continues to make a compelling case for being one of the most active, diverse ‘art spaces’ or galleries in town, with its upcoming weekend project/sleepover THINK TANK 1: Back to Your Basics.

And by Basics, they daily elements like transportation, education, shelter, etc.
The schedule of events is daunting and diverse, ranging from bike rides, continental breakfasts, presentations on YouTube and progressive education to optional overnight sleepovers. Oh, and it’s no budget.

CREATIVE COMMONS SALON

LA’s first new-fashioned Salon Series hosted by Creative Commons is taking place this Thursday night at LAND in Little Tokyo [366 E. 2nd St.].  The evening promises to be both a social mixer and a series of presentations by the following:

Eric Steuer, Creative Director for Creative Commons
Zadi Diaz, JetSet Show/Pixelodeon
John Gillilan, Vosotros Music

Los Angeles will be added to the exciting list of other cities which have been added to this series, including San Francisco, Toronto, Berlin, Beijing, Warsaw, Seoul, Brisbane, and Johannesburg.

In brief, Creative Commons, as a non-profit entity, creates licenses which define to what extent a certain property can be made available to the public while maintaining a certain level of rights for the property holder.  Creative Commons’ goals rest in the realm of appreciation for the ‘unlocking of information’ so that societal/technological evolution won’t be restrained and to find a reasonable compromise for the media ‘owner’ to be able to share and subsist of his/her creations/properties.

Also, the Salon is Free.

I finally got a few pictures up from last week’s Conjunction Gumption party. As you can see, [from left] Golden, CRZA, & Sam Sparro lost a few pounds of sweat and tears. If you missed Sam Sparro, his record release party is this Saturday at Bordello [info below]. Thanks to everyone who came and drank mint juleps.

Sunday Sweets 2

sunday-sweets-2.jpg

This is the last installment of our Paper Anniersary festivities.  Generally speaking, the music will be in the gentle, acoustic direction.  Performances by Chesley Walsh, Books Died On, Travis Taylor, Erick Cole, & our very own Amelia June.

Feel free to bring your own treets, beverages, etc., but we’ll definitely have you covered.

We hope to continue the Sunday Sweets series through the fall and into the new year.  In the coming months we will also be holding events such as short film screenings, literary readings, and having some special guest speakers.  More soon….

RESTITUTION PRESS: Tonight

 andrewhem1ss.jpg

Ghetto Gloss intends to reshape Glendale Blvd. tonight as they present a group show ‘Piece Meal’ that includes Andrew Hem and many incredibly popular street artists from the Restitution Press crew.  This will be another collaboration between Ghetto Gloss and the wildly au courant Seventh Letter Crew [see these ambitious/prolific artists all over Juxtapoz, LA Weekly, etc.].  Highly recommended.

Join us immediately following the Blonde Redhead performance [begins at 7:30pm] for DJ set by Found resident CRZA and a performance by Modus Vivendi’s amazing Sam Sparro.

A little taste of Sam from a recent show at El Cid in Silverlake:

Found in Jerusalem

JR in Jerusalem

A couple of weeks ago, outside Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem, I spied this sticker affixed to the back of a street sign from a block away. It looked awfully familiar and upon closer inspection, my suspicions were confirmed. It was a piece from JR’s Face2Face Project. Live and in the flesh, right there in the world’s holiest city. When I am back in Israel next month, I will keep my eyes peeled for more.

Live from the ME,

Brady

Update: Jonny and Chris just found JR work in Berlin.
