Sorry, Kind of - Cult Night
Although several of my friends are participating in this show, it’s hard for me not to be completely honest when thinking about tonight’s CRAZY 4 CULT show at 1988.
‘Over 50 artists put their own spin on classic cult films with one-of-a-kind original [sic] artwork’
That, I’m fine with. However, the evening will be hosted by Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier, and I have to call shenanigans on someone for that. Granted, I had Clerks on VHS when I was in seventh grade, but then I grew up. Did I miss something? Is Kevin Smith [see: Jersey Girl] the face of cult films or is he just a poor fat man’s Tarantino? I’m all for introducing other elements into a typical gallery setting, but there’s a huge disconnect.
Are Kevin Smith’s films cult films? I don’t think so. I think the early ones are just cheap. This question does raise further questions — such as ‘What will the artists pay homage to?’ and ‘Does the film maintain cult status if it has been licensed to Urban Outfitters?’
We’ll see, I suppose. Maybe I’m wrong about what ‘cult’ entails, but who wants to see Kevin Smith emceeing your art opening? My friend told me about how the LA Times is calling Steve Aoki our generation’s Warhol, which is frightening enough, but what if Kevin Smith was our Henry Darger?
This whole thing is unsettling, when I don’t believe it’s supposed to be.

I just checked out the art on the gallery’s website, and most of it is enjoyable. However, something irks me. Someone made a Boondock Saints inspired piece. Someone else purchased it. Someone else actually made this film. Jesus.
If you didn’t see it, then thank you
