Open Call LA 2007

The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery is holding an open exhibition.  Deadline: July 8.  $20 entry-one piece per artist.  ‘Unfinished’ work is unacceptable.  The curator also has veto power, but I think this would be a fun zoo to join.  I’m going to try to submit some bizarre stuff.  You should, too.

Friday Night at UCLA studios

Wooden = awesome

In addition to the aforementioned UCLA happenings, the overall UCLA Department of Art is holding its Spring 2007 Graduate Open Studios this Friday, June 1 7-9pm.

The studios are in Culver City (which, coincidentally is holding its artwalk this weekend, too…oh, and holding an ‘after party’ with Giant Drag) —-

I went last year, and as much of an overall diehard Trojans fan as I can be, UCLA does two things consistently really well: Basketball & MFA studio arts. Found Friend painters Juliana Romano & Ben Britton (who are finishing their second year) will be exhibiting, as well as about 40 other artists. Lots of ambitious young artists. Don’t miss it.

Important to me

wolfgang bauer on the green chair

I wanted to take the time, briefly, to explain why I find Wolfgang’s exhibit such a great landmark for the gallery and why the work itself should be seen in person.

In April 2006, when the concept of this gallery was still in the developmental stage with my partner and me, we came across Wolf’s work at USC’s open studios. He wasn’t there, but we were taken aback by ‘And the Winner is…’ and ‘Boys will be boys.’ Those were two of the pieces finished at that point. They were huge and startling. Without him there to explain, we had to make assumptions, obviously guessing the gender of the subjects with no clear answer.

More News — Cold War Kids will return in 08

Cold War Kids in the small room last December

Matt Maust and bandmates of Cold War Kids will return this February for what is being described as a ‘co-op’ between Matt and his photographer friend Matt Wignall.  Hmmm.  We like collaboration here.  This should definitely be another banger.

Special musical guests to perform.
