Gem on Saturday, details about LAAA.org, other things I didn’t do this weekend
So, I missed the ‘Opening of the LA Spring Art Season’ last night at Gem, hosted by the L.A.A.A., but it still feels like the winter to me. I had heard of the LAAA before, but I wasn’t really sure why I might be interested in getting involved. Here is why I think this might be interesting for ‘emerging artists’:
_________________________________________________________
+pros
Lots of exhibitions that are open/juried during the year.
Strong attendance at the events.
Lots of people working on your collective behalf.
Ability to propose solo shows.
-cons
Sizes for worked to be considered for admission into the group are rather small.
There are annual fees.
There seem to be significant cover charges for admission to most of their events.

I will be compiling some info on all sorts of grants available out there soon and posting it here. Will keep you aware.
PS-I also missed BLOW UP LA last night (Tim Sweeney, the Juan McLean, & James Friedman were spinning, among others). I hear it was ‘pretty cool.’ It was at the same hidden loft space on Beachwood where Crza & I saw DJ Harvey a few months ago. This just in, he just planned another Sarcastic Disco. It was criminally underattended. Come to the next one.

hey, man–just wanted to clear up one thing about laaa/gallery 825: the “gem” show was a fundraiser, which is why there was an admission charge. artists in the show didn’t pay, but everyone else did. as far as i know, no other 825 event has an admission charge, for artists or anyone else. there are charges for workshops, of course, but those are relatively low, compared with, say, otis.
anyway, good lookin out.
